Violet Way Academy - Equality Statement

The public sector equality duty is a key measure of the Equality Act 2010. It requires those carrying out public functions to consider the needs of all individuals. At Violet Way Academy we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all members of the academy community. This commitment applies to our work in the classroom, our pupil support systems, our recruitment and retention of staff and our work in the local and wider community. We aim to meet our obligations under the public sector equality duty by having due regard to the need to: 

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010 

  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it 

  • Foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it  

Protected characteristics include: age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race (including ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality), religion or belief (including lack of belief), sex and sexual orientation.  

We believe that equality should permeate all aspects of academy life and is the responsibility if every member of the academy and wider community. Every member of the academy should feel safe, secure, valued and of equal worth. Through our work in the classroom we will ensure that pupils understand the importance of equality and what forms discrimination can take and the impact discrimination can have. We will also seek to foster within our pupils their own commitment to promoting equality.  

Equality Objectives 

At Violet Way Academy, we are committed to meeting our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 to eliminate discrimination and ensure equality of opportunity for all members of our academy community. Our equality objectives are renewed every four years and are detailed below: 

Objectives for 2022-2026 

  • To promote understanding and respect for differences through the PSHE curriculum, which includes British Values and SMSC 

  • To raise attainment for disadvantaged pupils so that these are similar to or in line with other pupils nationally 

  • To close the gap in performance of all pupils with special educational needs or disabilities 

  • To ensure all pupils are supported through times of need through our HOPE, ELSA and nurture programmes so that emotional well-being impacts positively on achievement  

  • To improve levels of parental engagement in learning and school life, across all activities to ensure equity and fairness in access and engagement 

  • To raise awareness of our school values and how these relate to equality and diversity, providing training and information for all key stakeholders.
